May 22, 2017 Highlands/Atlantic Highlands NJ-The Atlantic Highlands and Highlands school districts continue to strive toward creating an environmentally conscious student body.  As part of this initiative, students, administration, and staff were able to participate in a “waste audit” at the school to analyze their daily trash and determine which items could have been recycled.

The program, which was facilitated by Bayshore Recycling in Keasbey NJ, was a wonderful way for students to take a hands-on-approach to conserving resources.  Company vice president Gary Sondermeyer, along with Highland’s own Cynthia Fair, aided in conducting the audits and provided the students with valuable information about the importance of recycling and conservation.  A wonderful time was had by all and significant progress was documented in the audit results.  Audits were conducted in November of 2016 and May of 2017 for comparison.

Highlights:

  • The audit attendance was outstanding and included principals, staff, and the superintendent.  This demonstrates a high level of commitment by both districts.
  • Atlantic Highlands Elementary improved their recycling rate from 27% to a whopping 50%.
  • The amount of contamination collected in the recyclables at both schools was 0% which is exemplary.
  • Students were encouraged to recycle whenever possible and place trash in the proper bins to reduce waste.
  • This could not have been possible without the assistance of Bayshore Recycling.  Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

The Atlantic Highlands and Highlands school districts are working toward receiving their Sustainable Jersey Bronze certification.  This distinction will recognize them as environmentally conscious districts and is a vital component in creating an earth friendly student body.  Principal Janet Walling attended the events and participated in the audit.

“I am very proud of our students and staff for actively participating in this initiative.  We are committed to educating everyone on the importance of conservation.  Thank you to Bayshore Recycling for helping to make this possible.  I am certain this exercise will have a lasting impact.”                -Janet Walling (AHES Principal)
